Weekend Work Canceled on First Ave S

SEATTLE--Work scheduled for this weekend on First Avenue South has been
canceled due to unforseen circumstances; therefore at least two
northbound lanes and one southbound lane will remain open between S
Stacy and S Horton streets. (SDOT previously announced that only one
northbound lane would be open. See yesterday's release, attached.)

Also, earlier today SDOT sent out a notice that E Marginal Way S may
not be a good alternative route to First Ave S on Monday or Tuesday,
March 2 and 3, because of the possibility of traffic backups near
Terminal 46. Enforcement of new federal identification card (TWIC)
requirements begins this weekend, and any traffic backups that could
result would most likely occur on Monday or Tuesday when traffic volumes
are higher than during the weekend. Other alternates are Fourth Avenue
South and Airport Way South.

SEATTLE - In a traffic release sent out yesterday (attached), SDOT
announced that
The Seattle Department of Transportation builds, maintains and operates
Seattle's $12 billion transportation infrastructure. To further Mayor
Nickels’ goal to get Seattle moving, the department manages short- and
long-term investments in streets, bridges, pavement and trees, that
better connect the city with the region.

Snow and Ice Update

SEATTLE: SDOT crews were on standby last night. The weather forecast at midnight predicted no "road snow," but cautioned that the situation could easily change. Night crews patrolled for ice, and when it began to snow, around 4 a.m., standby crews were called in to assist the regular nightshift crews.

Between 4 and 6 a.m., snow dumped on Seattle streets, leaving approximately one and two inches, varying according to location. All available trucks with plows and sand treated major arterial streets throughout the city.

Crews were dedicated specifically to the West Seattle Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct, and salt was applied to make sure they remained in good condition. Roadway Structures crews inspected bridges and overpasses to make sure walkways were passable and snow was not presenting a problem for opening and closing the moveable bridges. Trucks with plows and sanders were also directed to trouble spots in West Seattle and Southeast Seattle, called in by Seattle Police and King County Metro Transit.

By 7 a.m. air temperatures were rising and snow was turning to slush on many streets. Crews will continue plowing and sanding as long as they are needed.

SDOT Responds to Snow this Morning

SEATTLE--Snow was falling and sticking to roadway pavement early this morning in Seattle. In the early morning hours crews shifted from responding to reports of ice on the roadway to responding to snow.

Trucks with plows are assigned to major arterial streets throughout the city, attending primarily to inbound traffic lanes for the morning commute.

Update: First Avenue South Construction on Monday and Tuesday

SEATTLE - Drivers are advised that E Marginal Way South, mentioned in
yesterday's traffic advisory as one of the alternate routes to avoid
construction on First Avenue South, may not be the best choice on Monday
and Tuesday, Mar 2 and 3.

There is a potential for traffic backups Monday and Tuesday near
entrances to some of Port of Seattle secured areas, including Terminal
46 located along the waterfront to the south of downtown.  This is due
to enforcement of a new federal identification card requirement for
people entering the secured areas. Monday will be the first workweek day
that the enforcement will be in effect.  There could be backups caused
if some truck drivers arrive at the terminals without the required
credentials.
